Job Application Pack
Guidance Notes

Your application pack should contain:

- Application Form
- Advert, Job Description and Person Specification ( you will find these as "Attachments" to the vacancy in our Latest Vacancies section.)

Please complete the application form in black ink or type. You should complete the additional information section by matching your experience and skills with the information in the job description and person specification supplied to maximise your chance of gaining an interview.

Equal Opportunities

Alnwick District Council is committed to ensuring that no job applicant or employee is discriminated against on the grounds of age, (within normal retirement age), race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin, gender, marital status, sexuality, religion, responsibility for dependants, disability, trade union or political activity or any other factors that are not related to the requirements of the job, and which are not restricted by legislation.

To help us monitor and evaluate our effectiveness in providing equal opportunities, and for no other reason, applicants are requested to complete and return the Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form. The details supplied are held in confidence and are not used in any way in the recruitment and selection process.

Disabled applicants will qualify for an interview if they meet the essential criteria outlined in the person specification. If you have a disability that prevents you from completing this application form in a paper or online format you may alternatively submit a CV or audio tape, however, this should contain the same information that is requested on the application form.

Education and Training

Please ensure that you provide full details of the subject, nature and level of qualifications you have obtained. Original certificates will be checked and copied if you are successful in being appointed.

Employment History

Please provide full details of your current (or last) employment and highlight any achievements in this post. Where the information relates to your last employment please provide your reasons for leaving.

Please provide a continuous record of all experience, paid or unpaid, including for example, voluntary work, positions of responsibility or any other experience you consider relevant. If not full-time indicate the hours worked per week. Please explain any break in your work experience.

Duties Performed and Experience Gained

Please use this section to state your reasons for applying for this post including why, for example, you wish to change jobs. You should supply detailed evidence to demonstrate how you meet the requirements of the job description and indicate what particular skills and qualities you believe you would bring to the post. Continue on additional sheets as necessary. Please ensure that any additional sheets are clearly headed with the job title and are securely attached to your application form. Do not enter your name on these sheets.

Criminal Convictions

Under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, certain jobs are classed as those for which applicants must declare all criminal convictions/cautions, regardless of whether or not they are spent. All ‘unspent’ convictions must be disclosed. Disclosure of a conviction or caution does not necessarily mean that you will not be appointed. A person’s suitability will be considered as a whole in the light of all the information available. Examples of the types of employment requiring full disclosure include posts based in housing services, housing maintenance etc. If in doubt, you should assume the post for which you are applying is subject to the Exceptions Orders and provide details of all convictions ‘spent’ and ‘unspent’.

Please note that failure to disclose information to which the Council is entitled could result in dismissal or disciplinary action should you be appointed. All information given will be treated in the strictest confidence.

References

All appointments are subject to the receipt of two satisfactory references. In most cases references will be taken up in respect of the successful candidate following interview. If we wish to take up references prior to interview, your permission will be sought before we do this.

Relatives

If you fail to disclose a family relationship to any Councillor or senior employee of Alnwick District Council it will result in disqualification.

Medical History

Letting us know about a health problem does not mean that you will not receive consideration for the job. Any information you provide relating to your medical history will be treated in confidence. The individual appointed will be required to complete a medical questionnaire that will be screened by the Council’s medical adviser. You may be asked to attend a follow-up appointment.

Canvassing

You must not canvass members of the Council in relation to your application. This means you must not seek the support of the Elected members or attempt to ask them to influence the decision – if you do, you will be disqualified.

Data Protection

Data from your application may be held on computer in accordance with regulations established under the Data Protection Act.

Declaration

Please ensure that you have signed and dated the Application Form prior to return. Note that you should provide full and accurate information. Failure to do so may invalidate your application.
