Conservation in Alnwick District
Alnwick District is an area with a rich and varied history. The built environment of the District stands as a record of the past, in some cases signifying important events or individuals in the story of the area, in others just giving an insight into the lives of ordinary peoples. The Council has a duty to protect and promote the natural and built heritage of Alnwick and maximise the benefits that it affords as a resource. The Planning section does this in a number of ways:
- Advising on development control issues relating to listed buildings, conservation areas and trees under preservation orders.
- Giving advice to the public on repair and maintenance of listed buildings
- Identifying trees and buildings which are at risk and initiating action to ensure their survival
- Reviewing and assessing existing and proposed conservation areas
- Applying for and administering grant schemes for both conservation areas and listed buildings
- Provision of interdepartmental advisory service on conservation/heritage issues
